Why More Businesses Are Cooking With Claude

By Nick Maurer  ·   ·  6 min read  ·  AI Adoption

Claude has overtaken ChatGPT as the AI more U.S. businesses pay for. Here's what's driving it: safety commitments you can actually read, output that holds up in production, and four reasons most owners haven't heard about.

Until this spring, the AI most businesses paid for was ChatGPT, and the big question was whether to use AI at all. In 2026 the question has become which AI, for which job. On that question, a growing share of businesses are landing on Claude, the AI model made by Anthropic.

At VibeLab Group, Claude is one of the core tools in our kitchen. We use it to research, draft, build and test the automations we deliver. So we wanted to look past the hype and lay out, plainly, what's actually driving the shift. Some of it is what you'd expect. Some of it probably isn't.

The Numbers Behind the Shift

43.8%
of U.S. businesses in Ramp's spending data paid for Anthropic in August 2026, ahead of OpenAI at 39.8%
// Ramp AI Index, Sept 2026

growth in Anthropic's business adoption over the year to April 2026, when it first passed OpenAI
// Ramp AI Index, May 2026
32%
of the enterprise market for AI models (via API) was Claude's by mid-2025, ahead of OpenAI at 25%
// Menlo Ventures, July 2025
42%
of the enterprise market for AI coding was Claude's, double OpenAI's 21%

Ramp's index is built from real card and invoice payments rather than surveys, which makes it one of the better signals of where businesses actually spend. It also skews toward U.S. mid-market companies, so it isn't the whole market. But the direction across both sources is the same: Claude has gone from the alternative to the default for a large share of businesses.

Reason 1: Safety You Can Explain to a Client

For a small business, "AI safety" can sound abstract. In practice it comes down to a few concrete questions every owner should ask before putting any AI near customers, staff or data. Anthropic has public answers to each of them.

// The question you should ask // Anthropic's public answer
"Will my business data be used to train the model?"
Not by default. Anthropic states it does not use inputs or outputs from its commercial products (Claude for Work and the API) for training unless a customer opts in, for example by sending feedback.
"What rules does it follow?"
Anthropic publishes Claude's constitution, a written description of the values and behavior it trains Claude toward, most recently revised in January 2026. Its rules aren't a black box.
"Who is watching the risks as AI gets more capable?"
Anthropic's Responsible Scaling Policy, updated to version 3 in February 2026, commits it to publishing risk reports every three to six months as its models advance.

None of this means an AI tool is risk-free; nothing is. But when you're the one recommending a tool to your team or handling client information, being able to point to written commitments matters. For many businesses, that transparency is the deciding factor.

Businesses don't just want an AI that's capable. They want one whose rules they can read before they trust it with their customers.

Reason 2: Built for Real Output, Not Just Chat

The second driver is simple: Claude does a lot of work, reliably. Businesses aren't paying for clever answers. They're paying for finished output they can use.

  • It can read the whole file. Anthropic's current models handle up to 1 million tokens of context, roughly the length of several long books, so Claude can work across an entire contract set, policy manual or codebase at once instead of in pieces.
  • It produces long, finished work. Current models can write up to 128,000 tokens in a single response, enough for full reports, proposals and documentation rather than outlines.
  • It builds. Coding is where Claude pulled ahead first, and that matters even if you never write code: the same strength powers the automations, integrations and internal tools that save a small team hours every week.
  • It follows instructions. In production, the most valuable trait is predictability: doing the task the same way every time, in the format you asked for. That consistency is a big part of why teams keep Claude once they've tried it.

The Recipe Book: 4 Reasons You May Not Know

Safety and output get the headlines. These four get less attention, but for a growing business they can matter just as much.

01

It connects to your tools through an open standard

Anthropic created the Model Context Protocol (MCP), a common way for AI to plug into business software like your CRM, calendar or file storage. In December 2025 it donated MCP to the Linux Foundation's new Agentic AI Foundation. With over 10,000 public MCP servers, and support from ChatGPT, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot, an integration you build today isn't locked to one vendor.

02

Your best workflows become reusable "recipes"

Agent Skills let a business package a process (how you write a proposal, audit a spreadsheet or answer a type of enquiry) so Claude does it the same way every time. Anthropic released Skills as an open standard in December 2025, tools like Microsoft's VS Code and GitHub adopted it, and admins on Team and Enterprise plans can roll skills out company-wide.

03

You can buy it through the cloud you already use

Claude is available through Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud and Microsoft Foundry as well as directly from Anthropic. For businesses with an existing cloud agreement, that can mean using your current contract, billing and security setup instead of onboarding a new vendor.

04

It works inside Excel and PowerPoint

Claude for Excel and Claude for PowerPoint, in beta for paid plans on Mac and Windows, can read and write formulas, merge data, edit slides and carry context between open files. Your team gets AI help without leaving the programs they already spend their day in.

What to Watch Out For

Costs can creep. Ramp's own analysts flag that usage-based pricing rewards heavy use, and that some model changes have raised costs for certain tasks. Businesses are increasingly setting cheaper, standard models as the company default and saving the most powerful ones for work that needs them.

Reliability isn't perfect. Ramp also noted performance and reliability complaints in spring 2026. Any business process that depends on one provider should have a fallback.

No AI replaces review. Claude, like every AI model, can be wrong. Anything that touches customers, money or compliance still needs a person checking the output.

How to Start Cooking

The businesses getting the most from Claude aren't the ones with the biggest budgets. They're the ones that start small, measure, and build on what works.

  • Pick one workflow. A repetitive, text-heavy task such as proposals, intake, reporting or follow-ups is the ideal first dish.
  • Use a business plan, not personal accounts. Commercial plans come with the data protections described above. Staff pasting client data into personal accounts don't.
  • Match the model to the job. Not every task needs the most powerful model. The right mix keeps costs predictable.
  • Turn what works into a skill. Once a process works, package it so the whole team gets the same result.
  • Test before it touches customers. Run it against real examples and edge cases first, then measure time saved and errors caught.

Which task in your business takes the most hours each week and follows roughly the same steps every time?

That's your first recipe. It's usually where a well-built Claude workflow pays for itself fastest.

At VibeLab Group, we design, build and test AI workflows for small and mid-sized businesses, choosing the right model for each job and connecting it to the tools you already use. Every automation is tested in the lab before it goes live.
